Derrick Kosinski [part one]

You might know him as the heart and soul of last season’s MTV Real World/Road Rules Challenge The Gauntlet or from the new installment of the Challenge called Fresh Meat. He is a true Road Ruler at heart and his name is Derrick Kosinski or as most viewers know him as just “Derrick” from MTV’s Road Rules. I recently spoke to him from California, West Hollywood to be exact. Although still living in his native Chicago, Derrick is in California meeting up with agents and talking about setting up his career. Due to confidentiality agreements, Derrick could not discuss or reveal what was going to happen; instead he discussed what already took place. If you’re an avid watcher of the Challenges, then read on!

Static Noise:  How did this latest installment of the challenge go, personally?
Derrick Kosinski: So far, though, I have been staying under the radar. I have some veterans that have got my back. My partner, Diem, we worked out together everyday.

SN: It seems like you played your heart and soul in the Gauntlet. Are you just trying to relax and enjoy the challenge this time around?
DK: That was the whole game plan, right there. I wanted to establish who got my back. It’s all who you think your friends are. Any challenge that I do, I’m going to put my heart into it. On the Gauntlet it was so intense because everyday I had to go in and see what I was put up against. This time around you are sent to exile and you don’t know what it is. For me, I rather fight it out then do some puzzle.

SN: Did it bother you that there was going to be rookies on Fresh Meat this time around that have not been on Real World and Road Rules?
DK: Some cast members are really biased on having these new people on. Some veterans were like ‘Are they going to be regulars?’. My reply to that was like ‘so what’? The older people were cast the same way these new guys were. Now they just throw them on the Challenge. It didn’t bother me one bit. Some of the new guys have a lot of character. With each season of the Real World and Road Rules I get excited to see who is going to be on the Challenge with us. For example, “the hot chick” or “the deushbag”. Yeah it so it didn’t bother me one bit.

SN: What is up with Diem?
DK: She’s incredible. We pushed each other to train and at the beginning I found out that in three weeks she had to get chemo. To me cancer was like—fuck, now what? She definitely motivated me.

SN: You seemed a little biased towards the Austin cast. Is this true?
DK: When there are couples, they tend to separate themselves from the group. When that happens, it comes off as anti-social. It happened to me on the Gauntlet, it happens to every new person that is on. People didn’t like me in the beginning, but I always end up growing on them.
