Daniel
Bedingfield "Gotta Get Thru This"
by Rebecca Clark
Pop music is a wide spread disease infecting the world. Finding a pop artist who writes and produces his or her own music is rare. Daniel Bedingfield brings his own lyrical and producing skills to his United States album “Gotta Get Thru This.” With his number-one UK single “Gotta Get through this,” Bedinfield is going to give Justin Timberlake and Nick Carter a run for their money.
Daniel Bedingfield released his debut album in August. Bedingfield’s album contains a lot of diversity in style and beats. Most of the songs on the album are either love songs or about love. There are the typical radio friendly pop songs that have catchy lyrics and up beat rhythms like in “Gotta get Thru This,” which is catchy but doesn’t show the full potential of Bedingfield’s talent as a songwriter. The verse “I gotta get thru this, I gotta get thru this, I gotta make it, gotta make it, gotta make it thru this,” is reiterated through out the whole song. Knowing that Bedingfield was only 16 at the time of writing "Gotta Get Thru This" and listening to the rest of the album saves Bedingfield, showing that he has more depth as a songwriter.
In Bedingfield’s ballad “He don’t love you like I love you,” which is a pop/rock song that has melodic acoustic guitars and an easygoing sound, making the listener nod with enjoyment. The song still contains catchy verses, but also has more depth in some of the lyrics, “Tell me your heart is a liar, Tell me you’re not what I know you are, All that a man could desire, and he doesn’t know.”
“Honest Questions” is another type of ballad that Bendingfield has on the album. The tempo is toned down a lot, and strings accompany an acoustic guitar, giving the song a harmonious gloomy feel. Powerful lyrics are also intertwined in this melodic ballad “I will pour my water down upon a thirsty barren land And streams will flow from the dust of your bruised and broken soul.” R&B tempos are also found here and there on the album, such as in the song “Without the girl.”
Bedingfield, overall, did a good job on this album. It's diverse and appealing to the pop and R&B listeners. Bedingfield has a radio-friendly voice and knows how to make music that will appeal to a diverse listening base of pop fans. Bedingfield has something more than other artists in the pop genre, and offers real talent in making pop music more creative and worth listening to.
